A lip balm is a small, water-free blend of waxes, butters and oils. The wax gives it structure, and the butters and oils leave a protective film over the lips.
Lip products are applied many times a day and some of it is inevitably swallowed, which is part of why ingredient review matters for such a simple product.
Reading the label
- Flavour and scent
- Flavoured balms get their taste from essential oils or flavour ingredients. Unscented versions are listed separately where a brand makes one.
- Short lists
- Many balms have fewer than ten ingredients, which makes them one of the easiest products to read in full on our product pages.
